Celebrating 400 years of the Bible
Celebrating 400 years of the Bible in English

In 1611 the King James (Authorised) Version of the Bible was published, as opposed to the Bible being in Latin or Greek. It marked a departure in making the Bible accessible in our own language, so more people could read it!
Many organizations are producing resources for Churches and Christian groups to use – what a great opportunity to talk about & read the Bible! Let’s make the most of it.
Below are various resources available. If you know of other good resources, please contact maureencsdo@southwell.anglican.org to have them added to this page
As always we are keen that schools and children will be involved, so please don’t forget them when you are planning events!
Why not invite local schools to hold
“THE book week” in the Autumn term 2011?
Background
Most schools hold a ‘Book week’ during the year. We want to publicise THE BOOK WEEK; to promote to CHURCHES and SCHOOLS (all schools, not just church schools) the idea of a special book week, looking at THE book, the Bible (Using the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the King James Version of the Bible)
Things you could do
- It is a great opportunity to develop links with the schools in your area, as you will have something to offer them! You could run events in schools or have special events in church to invite schools to attend. A Bible based holiday club/fun day following a few assemblies or RE lessons?
- It would also be great to have a special Bible day (or weekend) in the Autumn term at your church – special services and all age activities. Watch out for service outlines coming soon
- Ask to do a survey in your local school, as part of the churches research into the use of the Bible today.
- Run a competition on the Bible – invite local school, youth & community groups to take part. Display entries for all to see, with an open invitation.
There are lots of ideas – please return to this page as we will be adding to it, with further resources. Below is a list you can download of external websites, which you may find useful

Bible-a-thon
Hold a Bible reading marathon! Publicise it in the community, and get people to join in. It could be a sponsored event (maybe raising money for Bibles in countries where they don’t have many?) or just an attempt to see how long your church can keep going!

Any of these competitions would make a great display in the church or school, or a local library or community centre.
Footprints Theatre Company
Why not hold a special drama production as part of your Book Week? It could take place in the church or school. Members of Footprints are happy to work with children in class, or do a ‘performance’. They are a fun, lively company based in Nottingham and have many Bible sketches in their repertoire eg Cowan's Apple - our version of the medieval mystery play of the Garden of Eden Jonah the Moaner - a comic retelling of the Old Testament story Mr G - a musical reworking of the parable of the Tenants in the Vineyard As Long as It's Wide - the Good Samaritan set in modern day Africa They may be contacted directly on admin@footprintstheatre.co.uk
