The Bishop of Sherwood
The Rt Revd Anthony Porter was consecrated as Bishop of Sherwood by the new Archbishop of York, the Most Revd John Sentamu, at York Minster on Tuesday, 21st March 2006. Tony is the first Anglican Bishop actually to live in Nottingham for 121 years.
Tony Porter is married to Lucille and they have four children including Sarah, a primary school teacher who is married to Anthony; Richard, who is a physiotherapist; Jennifer, who has opened a coffee shop called “Fresh Ground” in Aberystwyth, and David, currently in Japan with OMF before studying at Swansea University from the autumn.
After serving his first curacy in Edgware, North London, Tony became a curate at St Mary’s Haughton Green in Manchester Diocese before moving be priest-in-charge at Christ Church, Bacup. He then became Rector of Holy Trinity Rusholme, also in Manchester and on the edge of Moss Side for 15 years. During his time at Moss Side he was the chaplain for Manchester City Football Club and also to Greater Manchester Police.
