PHOTO OPPORTUNITY:
The Bishop will meet with wives of soldiers currently in Afghanistan over a coffee break on the barracks when he will have a chance to hear what it is like for the families going through long periods of separation. The day visit will include meeting with the soldiers from a variety of units based at Chilwell. He will also be given an overview of how the Army is currently operating and pressures faced by soldiers and families. The Revd Steven Griffiths said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming Bishop Paul and giving him the chance to meet soldiers and families based in his diocese. The prayers and support of local churches are much appreciated by members of the Armed Forces who are facing some of the toughest situations they have had many years.” After lunch with soldiers and chaplains, he will meet with members of the Territorial Army being prepared to deploy to Afghanistan.
Ends *Chetwynd Barracks is home to a number of Army units including 49(East) Brigade, the Reserves Training and Mobilisation Centre (RTMC) and 170 (Infrastructure Support) Group Royal Engineers. The Engineer Group consists of a headquarters and five Works Groups that together cover the full spectrum of military and civilian infrastructure support; from expeditionary camps to railways, ports, fuel, water, power generation and distribution and other utilities. The Reserves Training and Mobilisation Centre is the central hub for TA deployments. It prepares all branches of the reserve forces and civilians for service with the Regular Forces. This can range from the deployment into an operational theatre, such as Afghanistan or commitment for a peace time attachment. As well as being the organisation that help prepares reservists for active service the RTMC have a part to play in welcoming the troops back to the UK and helping them return to their civilian lives.
