Schools In Local Churches (SILC) Project
The Idea
There is a need to enable and equip churches to welcome and work with school groups. The key to this is using it as a mission opportunity as well as offering ‘educational’ and historical input. This support for churches could come through specific resources and adaptable templates, training and mentoring, aiming at good practice and faith-sharing.
Three strands to a church visit:
- Artefacts and architecture
- The building as a place of faith (not a museum)
- Bible story
Aims
The key aims and benefits of SILC would be:
- Mission – opening up churches, building relationships with schools and children, sharing faith in a place of faith
- Partnership – between Scripture Union, The Church of England, other denominations
WHO?
The core team members are
-
Nick Harding (Project Leader, Southwell & Nottingham Diocese Children’s Officer)
-
Adrian Kemp (East Midlands Division Salvation Army Children’s Officer)
-
Helen Proudfoot (Derby Diocese Children’s Officer)
-
Sue Brown (Scripture Union Schools Worker for South Yorkshire)
-
Maureen Collins (Church Schools Development Officer, Southwell & Nottingham Diocese)
What? The idea is to produce a resource pack with ideas to help a church better welcome local schools in, as part of their Religious Studies courses. This may include a DVD, games etc, as well as ideas for activities which will satisfy school attainment targets whilst giving children a picture of a living church.
If you have ideas, or things that you are already doing that work well, please let us know! We welcome ideas from schools or churches, or individuals!
