Bishop joins in church kart racing event

The Bishop of Sherwood, the Rt Revd Tony Porter, will be looking to Lewis Hamilton for tips  tomorrow afternoon (Saturday, 29th June 2007) when he takes to the race track to head up a team for the first Inter-Kart Challenge at the PF International Circuit at Marsden near Newark.

He will be competing with some 15 other teams from churches around the diocese at the kart event which will start at 5pm. Photo opportunities are available  from 4-7pm at the track.

The Bishop will be joined in his team ( called 'Purple Haze') by senior clergy and church leaders including the Archdeacon of Nottingham, the Ven Peter Hill and the Bishop's Adviser on Women's Ministry, the Revd  Ruth Worsley.

The competitive kart race has been organised to encourage sports-minded Christians from across the diocese to get together. One of the brains behind the event, the Revd Simon Butler, who drives racing cars in his spare time and is the curate at St Giles Church, West Bridgford, said: “Everyone should be aware this event is not for the faint-hearted!  We’ll be using 70mph Pro-Karts on the UK’s top international spec outdoor kart circuit.”

The event will begin with a 30 minute practice session at 4.30pm, with the race itself kicking-off at 5pm. Supporters from churches around the diocese will be cheering on the teams from the grandstand seating on the side of the track. The race will be followed by food at a  £5 per head (tickets available on the gate) and after the podium presentations and refreshments there will be a short service of worship, when the Bishop of Sherwood will give a talk .
