Bishop of Sherwood launches 'Prince of Thieves' book in the forest

The Bishop of Sherwood, the Rt Revd Tony Porter will launch a new booklet this week entitled ‘Prince of Thieves’.

The publication is based on his personal journey of faith, which began as a student who was passionate about sport at university.

The Bishop will be available for a photocall with the new booklet in front of the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest on Thursday, 7th December at 10am

More than 200 copies of the booklet have been sold around the county in the last few weeks and Bishop Tony’s hopes it will be picked up by many people interested in exploring the Christian faith.

He said: “On my 20th birthday, in 1972, someone pointed me to Christ. If anyone can use ‘Prince of Thieves’ to point a friend, relative or work colleague to Christ, that  will be the answer to my prayers.”

Extract from the booklet:

The training in the afternoon was going fine.  It was usually fitness and skills for 90 minutes, followed by a game for half and hour.  On this day the captain (Brian Belcher from South Africa), decided to finish with an exercise that involved running into the circle and shooting on sight.  Someone would race down the right, cut into the circle, and let fly.  A whistle would go and the next player would race down the left.  A whistle went and Norman went racing down the right wing.  Another whistle went, so off I sprinted: it wasn’t until later that I found out the second whistle came from the adjacent football pitch.  Norman came sprinting in from the rightwing.  I came sprinting in from the left wing.  We collided at full speed: he carried on running, I went to hospital.  Norman was nearly twice my weight.

Copies of the publication are available for individuals or churches. Each booklet is priced £1 (plus post & packing). For further details email: christine@southwell.anglican.org
