Bishop sets-up historic child protection checks The Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham has appointed an independent lawyer to undertake a systematic review of all clergy files held by his office to make sure none of them contain outstanding child protection issues. This process, which has been agreed by bishops across the Church of England, is part of a proposed protocol announced by the Archbishop of Canterbury earlier in the year. The Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy said: “This independent review is an important step for us in minimizing any possible risk to children or young people. They each deserve the best care, nurture and teaching that the church is able to provide and we are firmly committed to safeguarding all children in our care.” In addition to the review of files on clergy, lay employees and Readers, the Bishop is also writing to previous senior post-holders to ask whether they have any information about cases of abuse or concerns expressed which they can recall from their time in the diocese which were not followed up at the time. If the search raises any concerns, urgent issues will be referred immediately to the relevant statutory authorities and the independent reviewer will also recommend action and pass the portfolio to the Diocesan Child Protection Management Group to formulate an action plan, led by the Child Protection Adviser. The diocese currently operates rigorous child protection procedures which involve a recruitment process including a requirement for an enhanced clergy and volunteer criminal record checks. Southwell & Nottingham Diocese has been a leader in the field of child protection since it introduced its 'Children and Young People First' policy in 1997. Every church in the diocese operates child protection policies with rules designed to provide a safe, supervised space for all and limit any risk. The Diocesan Child Protection Adviser also organises training and keeps the diocese in line with current legislation.
