Church workers join race to help combat cancer

A team of female staff from a Church of England administration centre in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, will join hundreds of other women from across the country in the ‘Race for Life’ event on Sunday June 3rd to raise money for cancer research.

The team of 13, including six staff who work for the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham (the Church of England across Nottinghamshire), will raise money for Cancer Research UK by taking part in a five kilometer route starting at Nottingham’s Victoria Embankment.

The Diocese has contributed £500 and the team hopes to raise over £1,000 through additional sponsorship from friends, colleagues and family.

Team organiser, Jill Stanforth said: “Earlier this year I lost a friend to breast cancer and that's why I decided to do ‘Race for Life’ this year. I thought it would be a good idea to get a group together as cancer does affect us all at some point. As a group we are hoping to raise at least £1000 between us. Anything that raises money and awareness must be a good thing. I think we are all looking forward to crossing the finishing line. “

Members of the team will include: Assistant to the Director of Education – Sheila Barker, from Hucknall; Office Manager for the Department for Development – Catriona Gundlach , from Aslockton; Finance administrator – Caroline Thornton, from Southwell; Personal Assistant to the Chief Executive – Barbara Wilds, from Farndon; Gift Aid Administrator –  Jill Stanforth, from Edwinstowe; Resources manager - Caroline Todd, from Southwell, and seven other members from churches in East Bridgford,  Edwinstowe,  Blidworth and Rainworth.
