Open Day for Southwell Minster Choir

Boys from across Nottinghamshire are being given the opportunity to have a taste of life as a cathedral chorister –  meeting the choristers and singing alongside them in the historic Southwell Minster.

Would-be choristers will also meet up with Ben Inman – now Head Chorister and a member of the first choir boy-band ‘The Choirboys’ - at the Southwell Minster Choir Open Day on Saturday 27th January 2007 from 3pm – 6.30pm in the Minster’s Great Hall. The afternoon is designed to give boys a taste of the rich and rewarding life of a cathedral chorister, in the run-up to vocal auditions for a place in the Minster Choir and the Minster School in the Spring.

Rector Chori of Southwell Minster, Paul Hale said: "I've always been really impressed with the youngsters we attract to our Open Day.They seem thoroughly to enjoy themselves as they get stuck in to singing music they've never heard or seen before, alongside our choristers. At the end of the day they are fizzing with the excitement of actually performing at a service in the Minster"

The day is especially aimed at any boys aged 7-9 who would like to try out singing in a choir or who already sing in a choir, although boys and girls who would like to find out more about the cathedral choirs are also welcome to attend. Would-be choristers will be able to join the world-famous Minster Choir to sing Choral Evensong in the cathedral at the end of the afternoon.

The whole programme promises to be an unforgettable experience and will include listening to performances by the choir and joining them in singing rehearsals. The new Southwell Minster Choir dvd  ‘A year in the Life’ will also be shown during the afternoon.

Families will be taken on a tour of the Minster, which will begin with a private showing of the film about the Minster, its work and music. Participants will also enjoy tea and cakes,

All the would-be choristers will join the Minster Choir to process into the Evensong service at 5.45pm and will join the choir in singing for part of the service in the beautiful and historic setting of Southwell Minster.
