Seven clergy for seven parishes
Seven parishes across Nottinghamshire will be welcoming new members of clergy next weekend (1st July 2007), when they are ordained into new roles in the Church of England during a colourful service of celebration at Southwell Minster.
The seven candidates have a wide range of work experiences, from youth and children’s work and social work to geology, management, health care and legal roles.
A further seven parish clergy will also be ordained as priests at 5pm on Saturday, 30th June at the Minster (see list below and editor’s note).
The following candidates will be ordained as Deacons by the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy at 11am on Sunday 1st July 2007 at Southwell Minster.
JENNY CORCORAN - Jenny is married to Dan, who is curate at St Helen's and St Luke’s Stapleford. Jenny worked as a youth and children's worker in Buckinghamshire, before going to train at St John's College, Nottingham. She is to serve her title with Revd. Alan Howe at Christ Church, Chilwell.
ANGELA FLETCHER - Angela is married to Anthony and they have two sons: Adam (22) and Andrew (20). She has been a Senior Family Worker for the local authority working with families in the community. Having trained on the East Midlands Ministry Training Course she is to serve her title with the Revd Alistair Littlewood in the parishes of St Mary’s Edwinstowe and St John the Evangelist, Perlethorpe.
ANNE NOBLE - Anne is married to Stephen and they have two children: Rhiannon (16) and Beth (13). Both Anne and Steve are geologists and she has also worked as a playgroup assistant. Having trained for ministry at St John’s College Nottingham she is to serve her title with the Revd Jerry Lepine in the parish of St Leonard’s, Wollaton.
NICK PELLING - Nick is married to Julie and they have one daughter Eliza (4). Nick has had various roles in Christian work and the voluntary sector including running a Christian sailing project, Director of a National disability charity and, prior to ordination was Manager of the Vine Community Centre at St Stephen’s Church in Hyson Green. He has trained on the East Midlands Ministry Training Course and will serve his title with the Revd Pat Hemstock in the parishes of the Southern Cluster of the Southwell Deanery (Epperstone, Gonalstone, Oxton, Woodborough and Calverton).
MEGAN SMITH - Megan is a Consultant Paediatric Intensivist at Nottingham University Hospitals. She undertook initial theological training whilst living and working in inner-city Manchester. After a period living in Australia and Canada, Megan moved to Nottingham and completed training on the East Midlands Ministry Training Course. She is to serve her title with Revd. David Rowe in the parish of St Wilfrid’s, Wilford.
CLAIRE TOWNS - Claire worked in Transport Planning in Lincolnshire before moving to Nottingham in 1998. Her present work is as a Team Leader in a Personality Disorder Unit of the NHS. She is also a qualified Counsellor. She trained for ordination at St. John’s College Nottingham and the East Midlands Ministry Training Course. She is to serve her title with Revd. Wayne Plimmer in the parish of St. John the Baptist, Beeston.
STEPHEN WALES - Stephen is married to Ann, and they have two children: Jennifer (6), and Rebecca (10 months). Stephen worked for a firm of solicitors and as an Analyst for a Police Force prior to training at the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield. Stephen will serve his title with Fr Jonathan MacGillivray in the parish of St John the Evangelist Carrington.
The following candidates will be ordained as Priests by the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy, at 5pm on Saturday 30th June 2007 at Southwell Minster.
SIMON BUTLER – Simon is married to Hannah whom he met whilst working in Oxford. Before training for 1 year at Ripon College Cuddesdon, Simon worked for St Aldate’s Church in Oxford, did post-graduate study at Wycliffe Hall Oxford, and spent three years at Oak Hill Theological College, London. He is serving his title with The Revd. Simon Cansdale at St Giles’, West Bridgford.
DAN CORCORAN - Dan is married to Jenny. They met during ordination training and Jenny is to be ordained deacon this year. Dan is a qualified information manager and youth worker and has worked in church, voluntary and education settings in Manchester and Croydon. He trained at St. John’s College in Nottingham and is serving his title with The Revd. Bill Craft at St. Helen’s and St. Luke’s, Stapleford.
ALISON MILBANK - Alison is married to the theologian, John Milbank, and they have two children: Arabella (19) and Sebastian (15). She holds a lectureship in Literature and Theology at the University of Nottingham. Having trained on the East Midlands Ministry Training Course she is serving her title with the Revd Canon Alan Payne in the parish of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, Lambley.
TIMOTHY POWNALL-JONES - Having studied theology at Cardiff University, Tim served in various roles as a parish worker in Birkenhead before training at Trinity College, Bristol. He is serving his title with the Revd Vivian Enever in the Newark Team Ministry.
KAREN ROOMS - Karen is married to Nigel and they have two sons, Joe (15) and Ally (13). After seven years as a mission partner in Tanzania, and before training at St. John's College, Nottingham, she was an advisor with Citizens' Advice and the diocesan Global and Local Worker. She is serving her title with Revd. Ruth Worsley at St.Stephen's with St.Paul's, Hyson Green & Forest Fields, Nottingham.
IRENE TISSINGTON - Irene works as a Customer Finance Advisor for a bank in Retford. She has trained for ordination on the East Midlands Ministry Training Course and she is serving her title with the Revd. David Anderson at All Saints, Harworth.
KAREN YOUNG - Karen has a psychiatric nursing background. She is currently working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist with drug addicts. Having studied theology part-time at Nottingham University, alongside her nursing career, Karen move to Cambridge to train at Westcott House, Cambridge. She was originally ordained Deacon in the Wakefield diocese before moving back to Nottingham. She is now serving her title with The Revd. Chris Rattenberry at St. Peter’s Ravenshead.
